How much humor do I need?

I get asked this question all the time by public speakers that are starting a career in public speaking. Unfortunately there is no cut and dried answer. The amount of humor you should use just depends. I know that is not the answer you want to hear, but it’s the truth.

However, there are a couple of questions that you can ask yourself that will help you find the right percentage of humor for your particular presentation.

1.)    Why I am I here? Am I here to entertain, inform, motivate, answer questions, ect?

2.)    What is the nature of my subject? Am I here to congratulate an audience on breaking last years sales record or I am here to inform the audience of upcoming massive layoffs?

3.)    What is the nature of my audience? Are they fun loving and laid back or do they want their info quickly and concise?

4.)    What about me? Have I developed appropriate humor that helps make my point or hold attention? Have I been practicing my one liners and jokes so that I am comfortable telling them right?

Answering these questions throughout you career in public speaking will point you in the right direction for how much humor you should use in your presentation.
