Lay Down the Law Throughout your career in public speaking, you will learn that you should always give your audience a clear set of ground rules right at the start of your program. It can be vitally important to the overall outcome of your presentation if you lay down the law first so the audience knows what to expect and there is no confusion later on. For instance, if you do not want to answer questions until the end of your program, state that in the beginning so your audience knows ahead of time. If you are going to allow comments from the audience, ask that they be kept to a certain amount of time (like 30 seconds or less).
