Choosing Appropriate Targets You must understand the importance of choosing the right targets in your career in public speaking. You must always remember to base your funny material on an important target that is shared with your audience. How do you get this information? By doing thorough preprogram research and using a pre-program questionnaire. Here are three ways you can relate to your audience. - People – use people they know in your jokes and stories.
Talk about the CEO or supervisor (make sure you get permission first). Joke about or insult the CEO of a major competitor. Just be cautious you may want to work for that competitor some day. Make sure you always pick BIG targets to tease, not the little guy. Never pick on secretaries, receptionists or janitors as the butt of a joke. - Places – Joke about the places they frequent.
Their cafeteria, the local bar, or the crowded highway leading to their workplace, are all good targets for humor. You can always joke about traffic related issues because everyone can always relate to that. - Things – Joke about the things that mean something to them.
You can joke about the new marketing plan, upcoming company picnic, a new voice mail system, ect. Just make sure the topic is not too hot to tease about. If you have a general audience and can not get specific information, then just go with general humor. Most people experience family conflicts, they go to the doctor, they stand in line at the grocery store, and deal with financial stress. You can joke about any universal problem which your audience can relate to. Home Article Index | Like this site? Bookmark Now! (Control-D) Tell a Friend! Email This Article |
